Marquette Essay free essay sample
Marquette would be an excellent place to continue my higher education. I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, and I have always dreamed of living in the city. The city of Milwaukee offers internships, culture and more, and I feel like this would be a great city in which to live the next four years of my life. I plan on majoring in public relations with a minor in psychology. With that degree, I would love to become an admissions counselor at a university and eventually work my way into alumni relations. Marquette offers opportunities to gain professional experience before students graduate with the required internships, and that is very appealing to me. High school has been a place of growth. I went from being a shy freshman to an outgoing and involved senior. Freshman year I did not know anyone and probably appeared to my peers like a mute. We will write a custom essay sample on Marquette Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I walked with my head down to my classes and rarely raised my hand to answer a question in class. However, my involvement in numerous sports and clubs forced me to get out of my comfort zone and become an effective communicator. Freshman year I played volleyball in the fall and have been playing ever since. Through volleyball I have been able to become vocal and step up and be more and more of a leader each year. Sophomore year I joined the school newspaper, The Prospector. My first year I was just a staff writer, but each year I worked my way up to a more executive position. Last year I was a feature and in-depth editor, and this year I am the executive opinion editor. This year, I even was awarded an honorable mention for copy and caption writing for clubs at the national journalism convention in St. Louis. Being a journalist forced me to go out into the school and interview people I did not know. It also forced me to become vulnerable to my peersââ¬â¢ critiques and also to be able to critique my editorsââ¬â¢ work and communicate in an effective format. At first, journalism was a course I used to improve my writing and communication skills, but it had become so much more. Writing and talking to people is my passion, and that is why I want to continue to use the skills I have learned and put them to use in a career. In closing, I am a responsible and enthusiastic student who will be an asset to the Marquette community.

Star Trek Beyond Whats Inside
Star Trek Beyond Whats Inside Beyond All Expectations: Star Trek is back! There are 3 types of people: the oneswho like Star Wars, the ones who enjoy Star Trek and the ones who are into both these epic movie pieces. Lets talk about Star Trek, as The Star Trek: Beyond hit the cinemas all around the world a few days ago. The fans have been anticipating this day for long three years, since the previous ST film has been released. And now Captain Kirk, Commander Spock and the rest of the crew are back! If you are really digging ST, prepare to die during the first 30 mins of the movie! They will crash Enterprise. Again. And it is epic!!! While being in progress of completing its 5 year mission, starship Enterprise has been attacked by the alien warrior race. The starship is destructed and has to land on the distant planet Altamid, where the base of aliens is located. Will the crew make it through this tough time? (Spoiler alert: they sure will! :)) After all these blockbusters that Hollywood fed us with during past months, Beyond is like a breath of fresh air. Its not a remake or reload, not a super-pathetic self-called Number_One_film_of_the_year. Its just a new exciting adventure of space explorers, who fight for the happy future of the Universe. First of all, its worth saying that scattering crew members apart was a great idea. Though Captain Kirk is still the main figure, each member of the crew gets the possibility to shine and show themselves, acting as individuals, not as parts of one coordinated organism, instead of what they usually are when being on board of Enterprise. Commander Spock, the most famous Vulcan of all times, experiences earthy troubles understanding how relationships should work. And we also find out, that Spock is magnificent in making presents. (Ok, no more spoilers, I promise!))The main antagonist in Star Trek: Beyond is Krall, or Captain Balthazar Edison (Balthazar wait, where could I have heard this name? Id say at least 3 other TV series). During the film he evolves in our eyes from vicious warlord, who attacks Enterprise, to complex character, who is guided by revenge and hatred for the new peaceful lifestyle of Federation. We could be positive about the fact that there will be a stand-off between Kirk and Krall at the end of the movie. And the good will prevail the evil (oops, there goes another spoiler!)) As usually, there theres someone who helps the crew to defeat evil. And here comes Jaylah, the scavenger, who is not native to Kralls planet. She lives in the wrecked starship, knows how to make traps and she sure knows how to fight! Jaylah somehow reminds me of Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. These two share much in common, beside the obvious fact that they both are strong female characters. At the beginning of the film both Kirk and Spock feel uncertain about staying a part of the Enterprise crew. But (lucky us!) overcoming difficulties force them to rethink their resignation. So, we may be pretty sure that sooner or later we are going to witness the Enterprise crews new exciting adventures at the final frontier.

How to Refer to Time
How to Refer to Time How to Refer to Time How to Refer to Time By Mark Nichol Itââ¬â¢s time to talk about time: specifically, how to write references to units of temporal measurement. This post will note style for increments from seconds to centuries. Time of Day Imprecise times of day are generally spelled out: ââ¬Å"six-oââ¬â¢clock news,â⬠ââ¬Å"half past one,â⬠ââ¬Å"a quarter to three,â⬠and ââ¬Å"eight thirty,â⬠as well as ââ¬Å"noonâ⬠and ââ¬Å"midnight,â⬠which are preferable to ââ¬Å"12 pmâ⬠or ââ¬Å"12 am,â⬠because technically, these times are neither post meridiem (ââ¬Å"after middayâ⬠) or ante meridiem (ââ¬Å"before middayâ⬠). Another solution is to write ââ¬Å"12 noonâ⬠or ââ¬Å"12 midnight,â⬠although the latter term could refer to either the very beginning or the very end of a given day. The style for precise time is ââ¬Å"12:34,â⬠though one-hour increments can be written with or without double zeroes as placeholders: Write ââ¬Å"1:00 p.m.â⬠or ââ¬Å"1 p.m.,â⬠though the former style is often seen as punctilious. Much of the world uses a twenty-four-hour clock system, so that the U.S. notation ââ¬Å"1:23â⬠is rendered almost everywhere else as ââ¬Å"1323,â⬠without a colon. This system is used occasionally in the United States, as in military and technological usage. Months and Days and/or Years References to dates consisting of the month and day require no comma (ââ¬Å"October 10 is tomorrowâ⬠), but set off an appended year with commas (ââ¬Å"October 10, 1960, dawned clear and brightâ⬠). (Donââ¬â¢t abbreviate the name of the month except in statistical arrays such as graphs and charts or to preserve direct quotations.) A subsequent mention of a day of the month (in which the month is known but not expressed again), however, should be spelled out in ordinal form (ââ¬Å"The 11th, by contrast, was dark and grayâ⬠); note that the ordinal should not be styled in superscript form. Omit a comma before and after the year when the month but not a specific date precedes it: ââ¬Å"January 2010 was an unusually wet month.â⬠A note to writers of American English: Keep in mind that much of the world uses day-month-year notation (ââ¬Å"25 December, 2010,â⬠and ââ¬Å"25-12-10â⬠as shorthand for that date), so make sure international readers are clear about which number-only notation you use. Years Years are almost always rendered in numerals. One major exception honors the convention of not beginning a sentence with a number, but itââ¬â¢s better to recast a sentence than to write, ââ¬Å"Two thousand eleven began auspiciously.â⬠Another end run around this problem is to precede the year at the beginning of a sentence with the phrase ââ¬Å"The year,â⬠but this strategy introduces nonessential wording and creates an inconsistency if other years are mentioned in the same content. Years can also be abbreviated (ââ¬Å"the spirit of ââ¬â¢76,â⬠ââ¬Å"the panic of ââ¬â¢29â⬠), but note that the elision marker is an apostrophe, not an open single quotation mark. Decades Decades are displayed in numeral form or spelled out. However, no apostrophe is needed in the former style (ââ¬Å"2010s,â⬠not ââ¬Å"2010ââ¬â¢sâ⬠), although some publications retain this archaism. Do, however, precede the elided version of a decade with an apostrophe, just as in informal references to specific years, as mentioned in the previous post. Phrases that include more than one decade generally use complete numbers for all decades (ââ¬Å"the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940sâ⬠)â⬠but elision is acceptable in informal usage. Lowercase spelled-out versions (ââ¬Å"the ninetiesâ⬠) unless the number is part of the signifier of a cultural era (ââ¬Å"the Roaring Twentiesâ⬠). Ten-year ranges of decades are divided one of two ways: ââ¬Å"2000-2009â⬠(or ââ¬Å"2000-09â⬠), or ââ¬Å"2001-2010â⬠(or ââ¬Å"2001-10â⬠). If your writing project includes multiple references to decades and you mix decade ranges and spelled-out names of decades throughout, make your preference for when a decade starts known, and stick with it. Note that the first two decades of any given century cannot logically or gracefully be rendered in numerals or words: ââ¬Å"1900sâ⬠already applies to the entire century, and ââ¬Å"1910sâ⬠is inelegant because the numbers between 10 and 20 do not have the same naming patterns as the larger numbers; meanwhile, ââ¬Å"the oughtsâ⬠(or ââ¬Å"aughtsâ⬠) and ââ¬Å"the teensâ⬠are widely considered clumsy solutions. Centuries and Eras Spell out or use numerals for names of centuries consistently depending on what style you use for other periods of time, but lowercase the word century. BCE and CE (ââ¬Å"before Common Eraâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Common Eraâ⬠) are acceptable secular alternatives to AD (anno Domini, or ââ¬Å"the year of our Lordâ⬠) and BC (ââ¬Å"before Christâ⬠), but the traditional forms prevail. Note that syntactically, AD precedes the year, while BC follows it. (Youââ¬â¢ll often see these abbreviations rendered in small caps diminutive versions of uppercase letters but this practice is fading in frequency.) Also, although the second number in a range can usually be elided to two digits (ââ¬Å"2001-10â⬠), when used with BC or BCE, the full form should be used to avoid confusion because, in these cases, the range falls rather than rises. (In other words, ââ¬Å"175-50 BCâ⬠is the full expression of a 125-year range, not one of a single generation in which the second number is elided.) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Long Term Effects of Divorce on Children Essay
The Long Term Effects of Divorce on Children - Essay Example They converse less and as a result open up negligibly. They seldom speak out what is within them and hurting from inside. They seem to be in a constant fight with their existence and life for them becomes a problem ââ¬â a problem that has got no bearing on their actions and yet they are on the receiving end. Academically, these children fall back on the track of education and are less interested at gaining the new avenues of knowledge and information. They seem unwelcoming to the new technological changes and are happy with their lives, in a desolate area with no one in company. Life for them is a slow killer but a killer for sure. With the passage of time, these children grow up to a less secure financial environment and they fall back on their expenses most of the times. They are usually dependent on one of their parents, with the one they live most of the times or in instances where both the parents have let gone on them, they are dependent on their guardians, which could be just about anyone. They are always trying to make both ends meet and in this quest cry their hearts out for having more of the finances since they seem to go broke on most of the times. As stated before, academically, divorce leaves an indelible negative impression, which means that education takes the backseat for them. They seem to focus more on the material gains and yet fail to realize the importance of gaining quality education for their own betterment ââ¬â education and knowledge which will guarantee them success in different areas of life. (Sun, unknown) They do not think of making a respectable career and their attention is more or less bent on extracting short term gains rather than long term profits, which could only be had in the wake of attaining education and that too in a consistent manner. Since these children are on the receiving end, they seem to end up using substances which are illegal and morally wrong for them. They indulge in

Case Study of Women and Global Leadership at Bestfoods
Of Women and Global Leadership at Bestfoods - Case Study Example Diversity should be maintained at all levels of the companiesââ¬â¢ organizational structure. While ensuring diversity, however, managers of the subsidiary branches should be left with the freedom of formulating their own diversity policies by incorporating different cultural and economic aspects of their markets. Question 2: Brodyââ¬â¢s idea to hold the forum I concur with Brodyââ¬â¢s idea to hold the forum as one way of promoting diversity in the companyââ¬â¢s workforce. The forum provided a great opportunity for the company to discuss the issues of diversity in detail and help each other understand the need to have a highly diversified workforce. Through the forum, various leaders of the company will be informed about the importance of diversity management and how a diverse workforce can steer the company to greater heights in to the future. Other ways through which the same objective could be met is by allowing the management teams of subsidiary companies to customize their own diversity policies based on the varying needs of the consumers in their markets. Question 3: Challenges for Brody and Shoemate in implementing the diversity strategy Like any other form of organizational change, this new diversity policy is likely to encounter resistance to change from various stakeholders in the organization. Conservative leaders are likely to be unwilling to implement the strategy and may prefer to maintain the status quo. Another challenge is the amount of resources and time that it will need to implement the policy. The employees will have to be trained and informed about the new strategies and this will take the organization a significant amount of time and resources. These challenges can however be overcome with proper management and cooperation between the management and the employees. Question 4: Steps taken to manage diversity prior to the forum Several steps were taken to manage the diversity situation in the company before the Women and Global l eadership forum. One such step was conducting a research in the companyââ¬â¢s workforce in order to determine the best ways to improve it. There was a commission on Diversity already formed to look at the issues of diversity. By the time the forum took place the company was one of the best performing in the industry in terms of diversity, with women, Africans Whites and various other minority groups represented in the companyââ¬â¢s Board of Directors. Question 5: Actions that have made this a successful change effort This new diversity policy has been a successful change effort for the company and this can be attributed to a variety of factors. First and foremost, there was proper planning that begun with a research study of the companyââ¬â¢s workforce. The findings of the study led to the realization of the new path the organization ought to take. There was further planning and involvement of all the stakeholder in the company throughout the process. The success can also b e attributed to effective communication between the management team and other employees. Question 6: Other steps to be taken in order to institutionalize the changes that began at the forum In order to effectively manage and maintain diversity in the workforce of the company, there is need to put in place appropriate structures for assessing progress made by

Factors Affecting General Motors
Factors Affecting General Motors Industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing and sale of motor vehicles are known as automotive industry. More than million of motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide in 2007. Figures show that in 2007, around 71.9 million new automobiles were sold worldwide in which 22.9 m sold in Europe, 21.4 m in Asia-Pacific, 19.4 m in USA and Canada, 4.4 m in Latin America, 2.4 m in the Middle East and 1.4 m in Africa. Though the markets in North America and Japan were inactive but in South America and Asia markets grew very strongly. Russia, Brazil and China were the one who showed rapid growth compare to others. In 2008, automotive industry were experiencing a combination of pricing pressures from raw material cost and changes in consumer buying habits due to rapid rise in the price of oil. G.M and other automotive industries were also facing external competition from the public transport sector, as consumers re-evaluate their private vehicle usage. U.S is the worlds largest consumer market for light vehicles, passenger cars and light trucks which are conquered by big three companies i.e. General Motors, Ford Motors and Daimler/Chrysler. But recently these three industries were started to lose their market share to other rivals within the industry. General Motors are facing huge competition by domestic company such as Ford Motors and Daimler/Chrysler and also by foreign companies such as Toyota Motors and Honda Motors who are able to produce car much cheaper cost than General Motors. In 2006, General Motors has been bankrupted and has been avoiding a filing for years. For years it has been using cars as razors to sell consumers a monthly package of razor blades- in the form of highly profitable car loans. And the reasons for its bankruptcy are because they were focusing mostly on their finance division rather than it vehicle design operation. GM cars were poorly designed and build, took long time to manufacture as compare to its toughest competitor Toyota who has better designed and high quality and cheaper. In past GM controlled half of North America vehicle market but presently it has only 19 percent control as GM has been ignoring competition due to which Toyota and other industry took over the market share. Since General Motors were focusing on making profit from finance they did not care about building better vehicles. It was managing in bubble as GM rewarded those employees who followed the old way of doing things and those who praises CEO wisdom and carry out his orders. PEST Analysis (P)olitical: Since 1960, there were more powerful and strict laws and Government intervention that has affected GM and other car industries. Mostly, all regulation was related to consumer increasing concern for environment and concern for the safer automobiles. (E)conomical: Automobile Industries plays an important role on every countries economy. As Automotive industry are major user of computer chips, aluminium, textiles, copper, steel, iron, lead, plastics, vinyl and rubber. Research and study had shown that for every autoworker there are seven other jobs created in other industry which include aluminium to lead to vinyl. (S)ociocultural: Todays people are mostly concern about their status and society judges on the basis of what type of car one drives. Manufacture takes advantage of this thought and target the market. Every one want attractive and nice car which other people admires. Consumers feel better when they driving nice and new car. (T)echnology: Internet had played a significant role in automotive industry. A study showed that about 60 % buyers referred to internet before making their purchase and out of that 60 percentage. 88 % buyer went to auto website before going and taking test drive. Strength and Weakness of General Motors. Strengths: Huge Market Share: Although General Motors market shares has dropped in United States but it still has very much competitive at 26 percent. On the other hand, it is increasing its share in Chinese market and world wide. They still believes that they have an opportunity to become automotive leader once again as it was before. Global Experience: Although General Motors share have decline recently but they have capability of becoming leader once again due to vast experience of almost 100 years. As GM current opportunity is to expand globally and it has got experience to do so. Variety of Brand names General Motors had been leaders in the past and reason for that is wide variety of quality brand names that differentiate it from other automotive manufacturer. Its current brands include GMC, GM Daewoo, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, Saab, Holden, Buick, Cadillac, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling. GMAC Customer Finance Program Since, General Motors Acceptance Corporation establishment in 1919, it has proven to be GMs most reliable source of revenue. On Star Satellite technology Star Satellite technology was developed in1996 with a subscriber of more than 3 million and it is the standard of all GM vehicles. The benefit of this technology is that vehicle can be easily tracked at the time of emergency or theft. On the other hand, it allows the driver as well as passengers to communicate with On star personnel just in one click of button. Weaknesses: Behind on Alternative Energy Movement: This is one of the biggest weaknesses of General Motors. The alternative energy/hybrid technology has already taken place in the automotive industry and GM has been one step behind the competition in terms of alternative energy vehicles. As a result, GM faced lots of problem including loss of market shares and fall in company profit. Now days for any automotive company looking for success must be Hybrid friendly and fuel efficient. Poor Organizational Structure: This is the second and significant weaknesses of GM. Its organizational structure seems to be too vertically integrated. As a result, there is lack of communication between top level management and bottom level management and may have played a part in GM falling behind on the alternative energy movement. Stagnant Profitability: General Motors profit has been certainly falling and they are struggling with respect to the size of their company. General Motors profit margin was about 1.5 % and the ROE has dramatically decreasing by dropping to 10 % in 2004. At this situation shareholders are not happy and they are becoming less interested. Fully Based on US market: For any one who is concentrating on one particularr market cant be successful. This is what happened to GMs case, it fully dependent on the US market. It must take advantage of the opportunity to expand globally. Due to high competition, it is becoming too strong to focus on just one country. Over Dependent on General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) Financing: The other important weakness of General Motors is that it is too dependent on its financing program. Although, it is accepted that it is a great strength for GM, however it will be a problem if it solely rely on financing and cant turn profits, in order to compete with Honda and Toyota who are rapidly growing. Poor Credit Status: GMs credit status is steadily declining same as everything else. It is losing credit in market and amongst the customer. Its current ratio is merely above 1 and its acid test is even lower. Poor strategies and lack of Foresight: Due to increase in oil prices, consumers began to turn away from SUVs, but still General Motors predicted much of its operating success on its ability to sell newly unpopular vehicles. While companies like Toyota, were concentrating on light vehicle and in improving efficiency where GM assumed sales would continue in future. ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT Organizational Development is a system which differs from other systems of organizational change by putting stress/focusing on process rather than problems. In fact, change system focuses on identifying problems in an organization and then trying to alter the behaviour that creates the problem. OD is a methodology intended for use in complex situations to provide intervention strategy for change management. OD finds the behavioural interactions and the pattern that creates or sustain problem. In fact, OD does not change the behaviours, but they focus on creating a behaviourally healthy organization that will automatically solve and prevents the problems. OD generally considered long term effort that is of at least one to three years in most cases. In addition, it mostly focuses on combined management where manager and workers of different level communicate and unite to solve the problem. OD understands the fact that all organization is different and same solution cant put in every co mpany. The other feature of OD is that it gives importance to team work and small group. The important features of OD programs is the change agent, that is group or individual which makes OD process much easier. Almost all change agent are consultant from outside who are experienced in managing OD programs but sometimes companies may utilize its inside managers. The benefits of consultant from outside are that they provide a different outlook and have a less biased view of the organizations problems and needs. The disadvantage of outside change agents is that its lack an in depth of understanding of main issues mainly one specific organization.
